In this high priced housing market, you need to ask yourself if you are overpaying for home features you might not need?
One way to keep your home purchase budget in check is to take a good look at what features you NEED vs what features you WANT.
One of the big features you might not need is an expensive school district. If you do not have children yet or don’t plan on having children, you can get more home for the $$$’s by not buying a home in an expensive school district. Then when children come along and they are ready to start school, then take the equity you’ve earned in your current home to buy into a neighborhood with a great school district.
For those buyers looking for condos or townhomes, the idea of having a pool and tennis courts in your complex sounds so wonderful, but ask yourself how often you would actually use those amenities. If the answer is not very often, consider looking for a condo in a complex where you won’t have to pay a higher HOA for those features.
You may NEED 3 bedrooms but really WANT 4 bedrooms. You might be able to find a home that is a little less expensive but only has 3 bedrooms.
All those name brand stainless steel appliances look so nice, but might you be able to put up with white or black appliances until you can save up to replace them?
You might want to make a list of things that you NEED vs things that you WANT. That will help prevent impulse buying features that might be a waste of money for you.
